THE BOARDROOM

And the beast was given a mouth that bellowed arrogant boasts and uttered great blasphemies.

—Revelation 13:5

They’re seated at the massive oak table and are more than a little nervous. Sweating really, by the look of them. They wait for the director to enter and say “Good afternoon” in the most normal way they can muster. The last two or three days have been one effed-up mess, and they all sit and wonder the consequences while they wait.

With two big strides, the director is in the room and seated at the head of the table. “So,” he begins, “how about we start with the obvious?” as he gazes around at the sorriest bunch of feces to ever be birthed. Look to your right, dummy. That is where the snakes hide in the grass and the chickens have come to roost. Weed ’em out and dispose of them, forthwith. Quit being such a loser, Mr. Director. That voice persists until the director thinks he will go mad.

He does just that and sees the two men who have the most to gain, or lose, in this little scenario.

“First”—he glares at the younger of the two—“how about you explain how we lost two of our security detail and one of the key players in the next step of the operation? Was I not abundantly clear on how the response was supposed to look? Feds—it was supposed to look like a federal government operation! Do Feds assassinate two individuals in broad daylight? You were supposed to apprehend everybody then take them to the appointed location and then continue with the plan. What is your major malfunction?” the director bellows at the military-looking guy until the guy looks to be bent over backward.

The director then turns to the older of the two. “And you, how’s about you pull your head out of your posterior and start showing some results? You are supposed to be feeding our friends at the federal government just enough information to keep them in check, and what happens? Some little reporter steps right in with her goody-two-shoes boyfriend and mucks up the whole works! You assured me that she was going to be no problem. ‘I’ll steer her away, Mr. Director. Don’t fret, Mr. Director.’ Has that been the case?” he bellows once again as the board can almost see little bolts of steam rising from his crew cut. As though he can’t bear to sit still and be close to them, he gets up and starts pacing behind their chairs in the boardroom.

The older gentleman, clearly rattled to the core, musters up enough nerve to speak, turning to the youngster on his right. “You said, you promised, that the operation would go without a hitch, that no one would get hurt, especially her. The press is having a field day with this, dammit!”

The professional, distinguished man has his own still, small voice in his head saying over and over, Leave this place. There are forces here at work that you have no idea their capabilities, go now! But he can’t.
